FAQ

How many merchant items are in Chained Beasts?
Launch announcements state more than 40 items. The two official shop screens we document each show eight cards, with only Medicine (75 gold) and Shield Spikes (45 gold) matching across both—so any single screenshot is a slice of a larger pool.
What do Passive, Arena, Instant, and Equipment tags mean?
Those words appear as colored type labels on merchant cards. Official sources we read show the label text but do not publish full rules for each category beyond the Arena sidebar sentence quoted on the Steam screenshot.
Where do Arena items go after you buy them?
The Night IV screenshot sidebar says Arena weapons are added to each arena for any gladiator to pick up after the battle starts. Wording is quoted from that screen; other categories are not described the same way in our sources.
Which achievements mention the Merchant?
Collector: Purchase every type of item from the Merchant. Moneybags: Buy out the Merchant's entire store at once. Majority Stakeholder: Individually earn at least 400 coins in a run. Wording is from the Steam achievements list.
Is the merchant stock the same every night?
Not disclosed. Two verified screens list different eight-item sets except for Medicine and Shield Spikes at identical prices, which suggests variation, but Featherweight has not confirmed randomness, rotation, or night-based tables.

Where does the Merchant appear in a run?

Featherweight lists 40+ items purchasable from the Merchant alongside skills, Trainer progression, and Codex collection in launch materials. Between fights, party members spend gold on cards tagged Passive, Arena, Instant, or Equipment—the labels appear on screen with distinct colors (Passive blue, Arena red-pink, Instant green, Equipment purple on verified UI).

This page does not rank deals or recommend loadouts. It records only names, tags, effect lines, and prices visible on two official merchant layouts. For nightly afflictions and Trainer levels, see afflictions and Trainer; for crowd favorite mechanics tied to one Passive item, see crowd favorite and scoring.

What does the Night IV merchant screen show?

The Steam store screenshot ss-06 shows MERCHANT on NIGHT IV (typography on screen reads NiGHT IV). Three players are present; a PURCHASE button sits below eight cards. Gold on screen moves 171 ▶ 81 when two gold-bordered selections (Deadly Obsidian Sword 50 + Swift Sandals 40) match the arithmetic shown.

Sidebar text for Arena items (quoted verbatim):

These weapons will be added to each arena for any gladiator to pick up after the battle starts.

Table readings are as shown in the official Steam store screenshots; the release build may differ.

Item Type tag On-screen effect text Price (gold)
Pamphlets Passive Crowd throws clubs to the crowd favorite 60
Shop Discount Passive Future shop prices reduced by 40% 150
Wooden Club Arena A hefty club that smashes through shields · 3 durability 25
Deadly Obsidian Sword Arena Always crits · 8 durability 50
Medicine Instant All players heal 15hp 75
Swift Sandals Equipment Move 25% faster 40
Quilted Armor Equipment Take ~25% damage 40
Shield Spikes Equipment Attackers take damage when blocked 45

Pamphlets explicitly references the crowd favorite, linking shop purchases to post-battle labels documented on the scoring page. On Quilted Armor, the symbol before 25 is hard to read on the screenshot; we transcribe the line as shown and do not assert exact mitigation math.

What does the Gameplay Trailer merchant frame show?

Trailer frame f_025 shows another eight-card layout without the MERCHANT header in that crop. Explosive Bow (50 gold) is selected with three player cursors; gold reads 300 ▶ 250.

Readings are as shown in the official Gameplay Trailer; the release build may differ.

Item Type tag On-screen effect text Price (gold)
A Gift for the Quartermaster Passive More weapons will be scattered around the arena 65
Poisoned Apples Passive Half of the enemies start the battle hurt 90
Explosive Bow Arena A bow with explosive arrows;“4 durability” 50
Obsidian Hammer Arena A mace that sends enemies flying;“4 durability” 60
Medicine Instant All players heal 15 75
Sword Guard Equipment Damage to allies reduced to 0 45
Shield Spikes Equipment Attackers take damage when blocked 45
Leather Strop Equipment Crits cause +100% extra damage 60

Medicine wording differs slightly (15hp on the screenshot vs heal 15 on the trailer). Treat both as screen reads, not a confirmed rename.

How do the two shop screens compare?

Observation Detail
Items per screen Eight cards each
Exact name matches Medicine and Shield Spikes only
Shared prices Medicine 75; Shield Spikes 45 on both
All other names Different between ss-06 and f_025
Official pool size Announcements: 40+ items
Stock rules Not disclosed (random, rotation, or night tables)

Because only two items overlap, no single screenshot represents the full merchant catalog. Featherweight has not published complete item lists or drop tables in the sources we read.

What do the type tags say without extra rules?

We repeat only label text visible on cards:

  • Passive — blue tag; examples include Pamphlets, Shop Discount, A Gift for the Quartermaster, Poisoned Apples.
  • Arena — red-pink tag; sidebar on the Steam shot explains arena placement after battle start; items include clubs, swords, bows, and hammers with durability numbers on screen.
  • Instant — green tag; Medicine heals all players on both screens.
  • Equipment — purple tag; movement, armor, blocking, and crit modifiers appear in effect lines.

Color coding is visible on screenshots; mechanical definitions beyond quoted sentences are not disclosed in those sources.

Which achievements mention shopping?

From the Steam achievements list:

Achievement Official requirement text
Collector Purchase every type of item from the Merchant
Moneybags Buy out the Merchant’s entire store at once
Majority Stakeholder Individually earn at least 400 coins in a run

These confirm full-store purchases and large coin totals are designed goals, not player-invented grinds. They do not list every item type required for Collector.

How does this fit the rest of a run?

Gold shown on merchant UI (171, 300, etc.) ties into run economy but exchange rates, battle payouts, and REWARD lines after fights are documented separately on crowd favorite and scoring. New players should read the beginner guide for camp structure and the achievements guide for collection goals.
